Doctorate

The doctorate is an independent research achievement with the aim of making a significant contribution to the science of social work. Doctorates in social work can be theory-generating and/or application-orientated and are of central importance in the academic system for the qualification of academics and the development of the discipline.

We support doctoral candidates in social work by jointly finding suitable access routes to a doctorate, e.g. as part of our doctoral centre "Digital Innovations for a Changing Society" (DIWAG), as part of the BayWISS Joint Academic Partnership Social Changeor through co-operative doctoral procedures.

Overview

Doctoral support is structurally anchored in our organisation. Prof Dr Katrin Liel and Prof Dr Matthias Laub are the doctoral advisors at the Faculty of Social Work and are happy to help you achieve the goal of successfully completing your doctorate.

We offer individual counselling and support for those interested in doing a doctorate and doctoral candidates, e.g. during consultation hours, information events or during the annual DGSA Doctoral Colloquium SüdOst.

With the centre "Digital Innovations for a Changing Society", the DIWAG doctoral centre was created in collaboration with Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences and the East Bavarian Technical University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden, in which professors from the Institute for Social Change and Cohesion Research and the Institute for Data and Process Science are involved.

Landshut University of Applied Sciences is a location for the renowned nationwide DGSA doctoral colloquia.

The aim is to support the networking and qualification of young academics in social work and to create a space for personal and academic exchange.

Since 2021, the cross-university DGSA Doctoral Colloquium South-East has been held annually in January/February at different universities in South-East Germany. This gives doctoral candidates and those interested in doing a doctorate the opportunity to exchange ideas and network in Bavaria.

The DGSA Doctoral Colloquium South-East is aimed in particular at women and men who are concerned about the compatibility of a doctorate and family, as well as social work practitioners who want to immerse themselves in the academic world with their experience. In addition, we also explicitly address interested parties who do not come from an academic family and therefore may have completely different concerns.

Contact persons are the doctoral supervisors Prof. Dr Katrin Liel and Prof. Dr Matthias Laub as well as Prof. Dr Vera Taube from the TH Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

Together with KSH Munich (Munich and Benediktbeuern departments) and the University of Bamberg, HAW Landshut has developed a BayWISS Joint Academic Programme "Social Change". The aim is to establish reliable, barrier-free and predictable doctoral programmes for graduates and academic staff from Bavarian UASs. Supervision is carried out in close cooperation by lecturers from the university and HAW in tandem.

Applications to the BayWISS Joint Academic Partnership are possible on 31 March and 30 September. Prerequisites for the application are a very good Master's degree, a convincing exposé and the confirmation of supervision from a supervisor at a UAS or university in Bavaria.
