Visa and Registration

The most important steps for legalising your residence in Germany

Important notes

As soon as you have received the letter of admission from Landshut University of Applied Sciences, you can apply for a student visa at the relevant German embassy (if applicable). With the visa you are authorised to enter Germany.

Once you have entered Germany, you are obliged to register at the Residents' Registration Office within one week.

Further steps after your registration

EU citizens are covered by the Freedom of Movement Act and can settle and work or study in any EU country.

You therefore only need to register with the residents' registration office and no further steps are required.

You may stay in a European country for up to 360 days for study purposes (only if the BAMF decision is available - otherwise 90 days) without applying for a German residence permit.

As soon as you have your letter of admission, contact the relevant German embassy, which will issue you with a visa for the purpose of studying in Germany. As a rule, the visa will be issued for the duration of your exchange semester. You can stay in Germany legally for this period and do not need to apply for a German residence permit. If you want to stay longer than planned, you must contact the Foreigners' Registration Office in good time.
