Visa and registration

The most important steps for legalising your residence in Germany

Important notes

Depending on their country of origin, international students may need a visa and proof of funding. As the procedure can take months, please apply early. An appointment is usually also possible before you receive your letter of admission - but you must bring this with you to the appointment. Find out in advance about the necessary documents, the amount of proof of funding and funding opportunities.
You can find information on student visas and blocked accounts here.

Once you have entered Germany, you are obliged to register your residential address with the Residents' Registration Office.

Further steps after your registration

EU citizens are covered by the Freedom of Movement Act and can settle and work or study in any EU country.

You therefore only need to register with the residents' registration office and no further steps are required.

You may stay in a European country for up to 360 days for study purposes (only if the BAMF decision is available - otherwise 90 days) without applying for a German residence permit.

Once the visa has expired, a residence permit is usually applied for at the immigration office. It is best to make an appointment in good time and before the actual expiry date .

The following documents are required to apply for a residence permit:

- Certificate of enrolment. This can be downloaded via our PRIMUSS system

- A valid health insurance certificate

- Proof of a blocked account, a scholarship or otherwise sufficient funds for your studies in Germany

- Your identification in Germany: identity card, passport + visa (if available)

- Completed form "Application for a residence permit", which you can find here
