Financial Management

Financial management comprises the targeted planning, management and control of all measures for the procurement of funds (financing) and use of funds (investment) and therefore deals with the optimisation of all operational cash flows. Part I of the Financial Management competence module deals with the key principles, techniques and areas of investment analysis and management from the perspective of an investor. The corresponding module Financial Management II takes the perspective of the company (borrower of capital).

Financial Management I

The module focuses on basic concepts, approaches, functions, techniques and theories of investment management, the characteristics of the various asset classes and their similarities and differences. In this module, students apply quantitative methods of investment appraisal and financial statement analysis to practical case studies and exercises. They analyse the advantages and disadvantages of various investment alternatives. In particular, students learn how to determine the value of a listed company. This enables them to make favourable investment decisions appropriate to the situation at hand. Students learn about current events and developments on the financial markets and apply the skills they have learnt in a real economic context.

Financial Management II

In addition to structured forms of corporate financing (e.g. project financing), the second part of the financial management skills module also shows the connection between financial/balance sheet/business model analysis and forms of financing. Students develop a critical understanding of the most important corporate finance topics (e.g. M&A, company valuation) and can categorise these in the overarching topic of capital market financing. They are able to deepen their knowledge on the basis of problems (e.g. case studies). As the module refers to current events and developments on the financial markets, students are able to collect, evaluate and interpret relevant information from the current news situation (interest rate developments, stock market developments, economic cycles).
