Book Review – Social work and social welfare: an invitation, 7th edn, Vithya Murugan, Annah Kay Bender, and Marla Berg-Weger
Abstract
This book would be essential reading for anyone considering a degree in social work; however, its considerable length may deter some first-year students. As a textbook, it offers a clearly structured progression through the chapters, with explicit learning objectives aligned to educational policy and accreditation standards. Each chapter integrates case-based learning through brief scenarios that illustrate professional conduct in everyday practice and emphasize the development of reflective competence. The volume is organized into three main sections: an introduction to social work, its history, and socio-political context in the USA; an exploration of the profession’s political, normative, and ethical foundations, with particular attention to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, alongside guidance on navigating ethical dilemmas; and, finally, an overview of generalist social work practice and evidence-based interventions, covering work with individuals and families, groups, organizations, and communities, including advocacy work across diverse fields of social work practice.
