A novel type of small biogas plant

Abstract

Most biogas plants are constructed of concrete or steel, whose carbon footprints are not acceptable for a climate-friendly transformation of the entire energy system. Consequently, digester construction materials, such as polyethylene or polypropylene foils with low material requirements, were selected. These materials are easy to handle during construction and have sufficient long-term stability, as there are many positive long-term experiences in constructing household waste landfills. A small-scale biogas plant for the manure of 60 cattle and clover grass silage from an organic farm at the Landshut Agricultural Education Center is currently under construction. A combined heat and power gas engine will utilize the biogas to produce 16 kW of electrical and 35 kW of heating power. The thermal energy will be entirely used for heating the twodigesters in this plant. Alternative methods for using biogas were explored, such as producing biomethane as a fuel or using biogas in absorption cooling machines.
