Learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge: know the most important academic schools of thought on corporate and business strategy; understand the typical management challenges related to corporate and business strategy, in particular regarding content, process, timing, and risk.
  • Skills: critically select and apply standard techniques of strategic planning according to the design and positioning school of strategic thought;  analyze business situations from a strategy point of view.
  • Competences: identify, analyze, and deal with the intellectual, social and corporate-policy challenges during strategy formation and strategic change;  systematically develop a context-specific corporate or business strategy; combine and apply strategy concepts with concepts and methods from the functional areas of business administration

  • Basic approaches to strategy formation and their related schools of thought
  • Planning approach: strategy by design, planning process, positioning
  • Learning approach: premises, organizational learning, internal corporate venturing, resource-based view
  • Visioning approach: entrepreneurial and organizational vision, intuition, organizational culture
  • Venturing approach in professional organizations
  • The influence of power and politics on strategy
  • Insights from cognitive psychology
  • Strategy as part of an organization´s overall configuration
  • The value of corporate headquarters
  • Strategic control

The module includes case studies, group work, and - if feasible - guest lectures.

  • Vertieftes Verständnis des betriebswirtschaftlichen Innovationssystems aus realwirtschaftlicher, finanzieller, organisationaler und Managementperspektive
  • Einblick in die innovationsorientierte Positionierung und Entwicklung von Unternehmen
